Ponte Mouchão Red 2019

19,95 VAT included

The estate’s premium blend using predominantly indigenous Portuguese varieties.

Produced from the best, estate grown Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and small amounts of Syrah.  Even though it is the most recent red wine in Mouchão’s portfolio, it continues to conquer critics and wine enthusiasts.

Vinified using the estate’s ancestral techniques – grape bunches are hand-picked, foot-trodden, and fermented in open stone lagares, after which the wine is aged in a combination of new and old French oak barriques for 24 months.

This wine is deeply coloured and aromatic, intense but structured, complex and full of personality.

At Mouchão, all our red wines are vinified in open stone troughs, known as lagares. Whole bunches, including stems, are included in the maceration process making harvest timing especially critical to find the delicate balance between sugars, acids and overall phenological maturity, as well as stalk lignification.  The handpicked bunches are foot-trodden twice daily and allowed to ferment for 4-7 days.  The wine then undergoes malolactic fermentation in large 5000L wooden tonéis.  It is racked in mid-winter and then remains undisturbed for a further 18 months. Once bottled, the wine was matured in our cellars for a further 18 months before being released.

Vineyard plots and varieties are harvested separately. The complex and characterful Touriga Franca was sourced from the 16-year-old Ponte vineyard.  The fragrant Touriga Nacional and the hearty Syrah were both sourced from the 20-year-old Adega vineyard.  Both vineyards sit on well-drained alluvial soils mixed with red Mediterranean loams.  Responsible husbandry and care in the vineyard is critical for harvesting the best fruit and sustaining our healthy bee population.

Diligent winemaking ensured that quality expectations were exceeded in 2019.

Intense garnet colour and aromas of black fruit, plum jam, raw tobacco leaf, mint, spices with hints of Touriga Nacional florality.  Beautifully balanced and rich, possessing surprising freshness and structured, exuberant tannins that will help guarantee its longevity. Despite its considerable ageing potential, Ponte 2019 is showing beautifully in its youth.

Decant or open 12 to 24 hours beforehand, particularly before 2030.  Best served at 17ºc, alongside roasts, game, or hearty casseroles.
